The Finnish language can be learned in a variety of ways, not just in a classroom with a teacher. Informal language learning paths are often more efficient in terms of learning everyday language and forming social relations. Particularly the courage to use the language grows. Foreign students rarely find opportunities to use the language in practice.
Various methods have been tested and developed. Subject organizations have arranged, for example, language dates, where desired language pairs meet each other and take turns to speak in each other’s languages. Both parties thus receive a native conversation partner.
In Canada, discussion clubs are also facilitated by e.g. retired university lecturers.
The Finnish courses website contains information on Finnish and Swedish language courses held in the Helsinki region.
